Heather Kaplan

Kaplan displays clay figurines that explore play and childlike aesthetics. Like figurines and toys, Kaplan’s work begs to be rearranged and played with. Working in low fire clay, Kaplan renders some forms by hand and others through slip casting. She applies many layers of glaze and re-fires her pieces in order to achieve surface patterns and textures. Kaplan’s sculptures explore her interest in childlike aesthetics, particularly the aesthetics of carnivals, festivals and the imagination.

Kaplan is Doctoral Candidate at The Ohio State University in the Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy. She holds a BFA in Art and a BS and MS in Art Education from the Pennsylvania State University. Heather researches studio-making and early childhood art education. She is interested in notions of play, materiality, community and storytelling.
