Hannah Bates creates sculptures and installations that explore the fluid boundaries between the human body and the natural world. Wanderings through the woods of northeast Ohio serves as studio research as she studies human relationships to place. In Fruiting Body, plaster cast hands, foraged mushrooms, dried roots and berries, kombucha SCOBYs, and blown glass vessels are arranged as fragmented pieces of organic and inorganic material. The ambiguity of the abstracted forms imagines a narrative of intertwined social, ecological, and built environments. Therefore, the work becomes a space for both internal healing and external belonging.
